The Quest for Resiliency – Moving From Stressed Out to Chill
According to the American Psychological Association, teens are under pressure and reporting comparable stress levels and symptoms of stress as adults. A recent survey of American teens found that small, daily stressors are just as impactful over time as major stressful life events. This can lead to poor sleep habits, increased anger and lower academic performance, putting teens at a higher risk of experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety, along with a host of other psychological and physical issues.

According to the 2016 MN student survey results:
- One in five students indicated experiencing symptoms of depression,
- 9th grade students who reported mental health concerns lasting six months or more increased from 12.5% in 2013 to 17.3% in 2016; and
- The percentage of 11th graders who said they seriously considered suicide in the past year increased from 9.7% in 2013 to 12.0% in 2016.

In order to help teens stress less and provide a highly requested community resource, Allina Health created Change to Chill™ (CTC). CTC is a free, online resource that provides stress reduction skills, life balance techniques, mindfulness, resiliency, gratitude practice, deep breathing strategies and health education for teens. CTC has the flexibility to be adapted to individual or group needs and is customized for both teen and adult users.

CTC serves the greater community through work with teachers who use it in their classrooms, counselors who integrate it into their work with youth, teens who use it individually, in school and as part of social groups, and parents who are looking for ways to help their children stress less. CTC provides an easy way for teens to talk about stress and identify ways to manage it so they can thrive.

This session will highlight how stress affects all of us, and most importantly, it will provide you with ready-to-use, relevant resources to help you empower teens to build resiliency and find balance while building your own capacity for self-care. You’ll leave inspired and equipped to manage whatever comes your way and help the youth you work with stress less.

Presentation outline:
1. Welcome and introduction
2. Physiology behind stress
a. Effects on the human body
b. Effects on the learning environment
3. Change to Chill (Changetochill.org)
a. What it is, what it isn’t

Mental Health First Aid Activity Kits
Students have unique stress and risk factors related to the demands of school; balancing academic, social, and employment responsibilities while trying to grow in the understanding of being independent members of society. Statistics show that 75 percent of mental illnesses develop before age 25, making schools the ideal locations for early identification. However, the number one reason students say they do not use mental health resources is lack of knowledge that those resources even exist. You will walk out of this session with hands-on activity kits (we have 8 so far…working on a few more!) your students can engage in to learn more about Mental Health! Some of the activities are built around identifying signs and symptoms of mental health, identifying mental health resources and self-help strategies, making decisions around when and how to help others and what to say, etc.

Culture Awareness through a Physical Education Ambassador Experience
In 2017 our district was very lucky to take 12 students to South Africa. 4 of these students focused on learning the difference in athletics and physical education in South Africa compared to the USA, while the other group focused on agriculture. It was a very eye opening experience. We will take another group on the same trip in 2019. This was a great experience that other schools could also find a way to accomplish. I would like to talk about the process we went through related to approval, fund raising, insurance, and international travel with students. The goal would be for others to use the information to help set up their own International Athletic Ambassador Program in their district.

New standards, new ideas: How to incorporate the new PE standards into your current courses.
Presentation Link:  https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/162SZS5R6Z4AX4CUQAdLQFs7uliF5Fs-Rlg-4zyo9W8o/edit?usp=sharing

While we are all excited about the direction of the new Physical Education standards, many of us are running into the same road block: our current course descriptions. Changing course descriptions can be a years-long process in many districts, making it impossible to add, remove, or change courses as needed to make sure all students meet the new standards.

The solution? Think outside of the box to incorporate the standards into your district's current curriculum!

In this session, you will learn tips and tricks for activities, lessons, and assessments that can be utilized in a variety of courses (including the team sports model that is popular with many students). Some of the topics that will be covered are Dance (for those of us who are not dance experts!), Nutrition, Fitness Concepts, Developing Practice Plans, Fitness Portfolios, and Creating Meaningful Choice Time for students.
